Sometimes diversity, equity, and inclusion are words that are thrown around without any real action behind them. It is imperative to understand the WHY and the HOW. With all of the recent talk about allyship, this is the perfect opportunity for me to use my voice to educate.
After listening to and reflecting on the APTA Student Assembly #XchangeSA chat: Fostering Allyship in DEI last night, I created this infographic with 5 ways to foster allyship in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as a non-POC.
And to my fellow POC, specifically students, you are not here to just meet a quota or check a box. Affirmative action isn’t the reason you were accepted into your program. You earned your spot by working hard JUST like everyone else. You are worthy, and you deserve this opportunity and so much more! Don’t ever give up on your dreams.
I hope this infographic is helpful. Feel free to share or repost if you’d like; this how we start the conversation! I’ve also included a few definitions of common terms (equity, microaggression, performative activitsim, etc.), along with the resources I used to create this graphic.
(Special thanks to Michael Cromartie PT, DPT, Briana Scott PT, DPT, Mark Agholor PT, and Yusra Iftikhar PT for sharing their ideas and experiences—which were incorporated into this graphic)
