Many of the most successful people have (at least) one thing in common: WAKING UP EARLY! Now I know this is easier said than done. I too love sleeping in when I can. But who wants to go through the day feeling groggy and sluggish? Not I and probably not you! Shoutout to Mattie James and her podcast for encouraging me to make a necessary change (she is the BOMB, y’all gotta check her out!), it’s amazing how much these small changes have really impacted my mental health. Here is my current morning routine:
1. Tea/Coffee
My new routine (as of like two weeks ago honestly) involves waking up at least an hour before class/whatever I have planned for the day and slowly sipping my caffeinated drink (obsessed with chai and matcha tea lattes and right now). It is so nice to take my time and just sit ALONE and UNINTERRUPTED while I drink my warm drink. I will usually scroll through my phone and catch up on notifications, emails, DMs, etc. that I’ve missed.
2. Gratitude Journaling
A year ago my counselor required that I start a gratitude journal to help with my anxiety/mental health. I kept up with it for a few days, but it ultimately didn’t stick. I recently purchased the Five Minute Journal, and have loved it so far! It’s structured and has quotes and prompts for the morning AND night! I actually look forward to journaling, and it is a good way for me to remember the highlights of the day.
3. Reading
I always enjoy reading for pleasure, but never “have time”. I now MAKE time to read, even if only a few pages a day. I’m currently reading “Girl, Stop Apologizing” by Rachel Hollis. I am enjoying self-help books right now (this may be cheesy to some people, but who cares), because they really motivate me; especially ones written by women!
4. Vitamins/Medications
I take iron and ACV gummies (yes I’m basically a child ) for my anemia, Prozac for my anxiety, and allergy and dairy pills as needed. I am usually pretty lazy when it comes to taking all of my medications, so doing it when I FIRST wake up is essential.
These little things have been game changers for me lately. I now wake up excited for the day, because I have incorporated things I enjoy and look forward to. I challenge you to create a morning routine that you look forward to, then watch the magic happen!
